AGX238 Africa / Nigeria. Yoruba Janus oshe Shango 14" x 3 1/2"

$350.00

In the religion that is named for him, Shango is considered by believers to be the most powerful god. He is manifested in fearsome thunderstorms, often resulting in stones appearing on the ground after a rainstorm.

This may simply be the unearthing of large flat stones when the rainwater washes away surface soil.

Nevertheless, adherents of Shango beliefs attribute it to the force of Shango that creates thunder and lightning when Shango is offended.

Shango wands (oshe Shango) are used in ceremonial dances and as shrine objects. As with many objects associated with cults, the power is manifested only to believers. The objects themselves possess no known mystical power, good or evil, for non- believers.

Acquired in 1992 from African associate, Ali Sellah, who estimated the age at ca.1985. Maker once known. It is offered with a provenance certificate from Aboriginals Gallery.
