African Ibo kola bowl, wood, used to store and serve kola nuts. 18" diameter, AGX099

$2,000.00

African Ibo tribal bowl, wood, used to store and serve kola nuts used in welcoming ceremonies. As a part of Ibo hospitality, this kola bowl would have had high status in Ibo culture. The underside descends into an inverted cone shape.

We acquired it in 1992 from Ali Sellah, who estimated the age as ca. late 19th/early 20th century. These dates say it is somewhere between vintage and antique in age.

As with most authentic African tribal art, the artist was once known and probably highly regarded at the time this object was created. Of course, that rendered recording the artist’s identity not necessary.

This bowl, which is quite heavy, is in very good condition with but a small chip missing from the lip, likely the result of aging in a different climate than it was created in.

It will be shipped FREE at our expense to any address within the mainland 48 United States.
