Australian Aboriginal bark painting in ochre, charcoal and kaolin with natural binder. by Gawirrin Gumana . Originally acquired personally at Buku-Larngay Art Center, Nhulunbuy, Northern Territory, Australia, in 1994.

This Painting on bark created by Gawirrin Gumana (1935–2016) of Dhalwaŋu clan, Yirritja moiety, Yirrkala, portrays two Dreamtime brothers who travelled in a canoe to visit the Milkyway. They have two fish for sustenance and are surrounded by icons of indigenous legends.

Gawirrin Gumana, the eldest son of Birrikitji, was the oldest surviving painter of the Yirrkala Church Panels (1963). He won the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award in 2002. A year later he received the Order of Australia for his services to Indigenous art and he was named for the Clemenger Contemporary Art Award. In 2009, he won the Red Ochre Award.

We originally acquired this guaranteed authentic Aboriginal bark painting from Buku-Larrngay Art Cooperative, where upon it was immediately purchased by an employee in our Sanibel Island Gallery. When she passed, (name available on request) we acquired it again from her estate.
