Aboriginal dot painting, acrylic on canvas, “Butterfly (Matimati) Dreaming”, by Anthony Nemarluk, Port Keats, western Northern Territory.

Could be a namesake of Nemarluk, a fierce Aborigine warrior who also inhabited the Port Keats area in the early 20th Century. Nemarluk was tried and convicted of murdering the crew of a Japanese fishing boat that anchored near his lands. He died in 1940.

Whether or not there was any relationship between Anthony Nemarluk, the painter, and Nemarluk, the warrior, does not diminish the striking beauty of this indigenous Aboriginal art painting.

The Aboriginal name for the community is Wadeye. We acquired this impressive work from the Wadeye Gallery in Darwin, NT, in 2001.
