"Spiritual Lands", Australia/Great Lakes, Len Cunningham, Worimi, dot painting, #AGKA28 ~ 35" x 24"
Australia/Great Lakes, dot painting, acrylic on canvas, “Spiritual Lands”.
This is a Westernized variation, portraying a symbolic landscape, in traditional Aboriginal dot painting technique, by Len Cunningham/Worimi, ca. 1999.
Traditional Worimi tribal lands are on the east coast of New South Wales, to the north of Sydney. Newcastle is the modern city that developed within or adjacent to these lands.
As a result, Worimi people today are primarily urban. Worimi paintings display the influences of European-Australian culture in adapting dot technique to hybrid approaches to the canvas.
We acquired this unique authentic work of Aboriginal art at Tobwabba Gallery in Adelaide, South Australia, in September 2001. It has been held in climate-controlled conditions since then and is in excellent condition.
