Man’s ceremonial carrying cloth, village of Chichicastenango, Dept of el Quiche, Cotton plain weave with silk supplementary weft brocade in form of large, fantastic animals. Small ikat (jaspe) stripes on ground. Silk embroidered seam (randa) between the two back-strap woven panels. Ca.1930-1950. Collected in Guatemala from a private Guatemalan collection. “The light colored silk brocade figures on the strong red striped ground is today rarely done if at all.” James D.
